Desk with pencils and paperIn observing my study environment, it is apparent that I often work within very disheveled spaces. I think that typically carries a negative connotation, but I think of it as more of a contrast to my personality. I like to think I maintain a very neat image, as well as tidy spaces, but with art-making, that is completely off the table. I am too caught up in the process, and at times that leaves me with a sort of disregard for the studio or room that I am working within. I think there is something about this that I romanticize to some extent, maybe in a similar fashion as the artist separating themselves from society, as the reading mentioned. Besides that, the mood is likely the most important factor in my success in my space. It is not so much my personal mood, but more so the time of day. I struggle to work during the day, but if it is dark out, then I find myself working till sunrise at times. I feel like this is likely a commonality with other artists; nonetheless, it is very important in my process. I think there is peace of mind that comes with knowing so many people are asleep. I am left with all this spare time to be productive in my creativity, and that is without the pressure of priorities and social engagements that I typically associate with morning or afternoon hours.
