The Jo Ann (Jody) and Dr. Charles O. Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts and Design collaborates with arts providers and organizations to offer rewarding experiences in art education to CVAD students. Visit the links on this page for details about each opportunity.

A fellowship is a monetary award given to a scholar to support their academic pursuits — typically a merit-based scholarship for advanced study of an academic subject.

Applications for fellowship positions for the next academic year will be accepted in March of each year.

Job Description
The Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts and Design and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art are collaborating to offer a CVAD student a unique fellowship opportunity to gain experience in museum education. The fellow will learn museum education aspects, including the following:

Observing, planning, and implementing community teaching programs for K-12 audiences, both in the galleries and offsite at community partner locations
Observing, planning, and implementing K-12 school tours in the galleries
Executing K-12 teacher workshops
Evaluating education programs

Funding
This fellowship is generously funded through the Onstead Institute and the Amon Carter Museum. The fellow will receive an $8,000 academic award as part of the fellowship and to help defray the tuition for six credit hours of internship coursework, in which the fellow must enroll.

Logistics
Participating students will enroll in six credit hours of ART 5450 - Professional Internship with the CVAD Department of Art Education. The instructor of record at UNT is Laura Evans, associate professor of art education. The six credit hours in ART 5450 can fulfill the internship requirement for the graduate Art Museum Education Certificate.

Fellowship Period
This fellowship consists of 10 hours per week at the Amon Carter Museum throughout the 2025–2026 academic year for a total of 270 hours onsite at the museum. The fellow and their supervisor at the museum will decide how to distribute the 10 hours over a week.

Eligibility
Applicants must be currently enrolled graduate students at the University of North Texas and have completed or be currently enrolled in at least one art museum education course in art education or art history. Preferred candidates will have some experience in museums or as educators.

The Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts and Design and the Greater Denton Arts Council are collaborating to offer a CVAD student a unique fellowship opportunity to gain experience in community arts. The fellow will learn art education aspects, including the following.

Assist with creating and implementing programming to coincide with current exhibitions.
Create materials for visitors to engage with that accompany exhibitions, events, and programming.
Assist with some aspects of the curatorial process, such as installation, deinstallation, creating labels and accompanying materials.

Funding

This fellowship is generously funded through the Onstead Institute. The fellow will receive an $8,000 academic award as part of the fellowship and to help defray the tuition for six credit hours of internship coursework, in which the fellow must enroll.

Job Description
The Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts and Design and the Kinfolk House are collaborating to offer a CVAD student a singular fellowship opportunity to gain experience within youth-based art education. The fellow will learn aspects of youth-based art education, including the following.

Working with the executive director to create and implement thematic tours for K-12 and multigenerational audiences
Collaborating with the Kinfolk team to develop and implement arts activities for on- and off-site events for K-12 students and educators
Designing and recording art-making demonstrations for K-12 students and educators
Assisting with data collection and evaluation related to educational programs
Participating in planning meetings

Funding
This fellowship is generously funded through the Onstead Institute and Kinfolk House. The fellow will receive an $8,000 academic award as part of the fellowship and help defray the tuition for six credit hours of internship coursework, in which the intern must enroll.

Logistics
Participating students will enroll in six credit hours of ART 5450-Professional Internship with the CVAD Department of Art Education. The instructor of record at UNT is Laura Evans, associate professor of art education. The six credit hours in ART 5450 can fulfill the internship requirement for the graduate Art Museum Education Certificate.

Fellowship Period
This fellowship includes 300 hours at Kinfolk House during the 2025-2026 Fall and Spring semesters. The fellowship is from August 2025 through the last day of classes in May 2026. UNT holiday breaks will be observed. The fellow will be in the Kinfolk House offices a minimum of one day per week and working remotely one day per week for a total of 10 hours per week over the fellowship term, with occasional additional evening and weekend hours. The fellow will work with their supervisor at the Kinfolk House to determine the exact weekly schedule.

Eligibility
Applicants must be currently enrolled graduate students at the University of North Texas and have completed or be currently enrolled in at least one Art Museum Education course in the Department of Art Education. Preferred candidates will have some experience in informal education environments and/or be fluent in Spanish.

Job Description
The fellow will learn aspects of museum education, including the following.

Assist with family programming as needed, including Family Days, Open Studios, Art-on-the-Go Kits, Sensory Carts and Preschool Playdate programs.
Assist with school programming, including teacher workshops and K-12 tours.
Assist with adult and university programs, including ARTafterDARK: Southern Methodist University College Night and memory care programs.

Job Description
The Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts and Design and the College of Visual Arts and Design Texas Fashion Collection at UNT are collaborating to offer a graduate student a singular fellowship opportunity to gain experience working and learning aspects of collections research. The fellow would collaborate and partner with TFC staff under the supervision of the director, and they will conduct research and professional development activities, including a combination of the following.

Contribute to research and development of collections-based database records, curatorial files, and curatorial projects
Research and write a white paper relating to a topic of collections curation or stewardship
Work with TFC staff to digitize the collection's holdings, including assisting with photography sessions, creating metadata, and updating digital records
Assist with select exhibitions and programming relating to TFC holdings, including presenting with TFC staff for the UNT Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Funding
This fellowship is generously funded through the Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts and Design. The fellow will receive $8,000 in payments of $4,000 per semester.

Logistics
Participating students will enroll in six UNT graduate credit hours in corresponding coursework through their degree program's department.

Fellowship Period
This fellowship consists of 10 hours per week at the TFC for a total of 135 hours onsite at the Collection per semester. This fellowship runs from the start of the fall semester of 2025 to the end of the spring semester of 2026. The fellow and their supervisor at the TFC will decide how to distribute the 10 hours over a week. Alternatively, the fellowship can be completed over the course of one academic semester.

Eligibility
Applicants must be currently enrolled graduate students at the University of North Texas and have completed at least one relevant graduate course. Preferred candidates will have some experience in material culture research or gallery or museum professional experience.

The Onstead Institute for Education in the Visual Arts and Design and the Sid Richardson Museum are collaborating to offer a CVAD student a singular fellowship opportunity to gain experience within museum education. The fellow will gain awareness of and have opportunities to implement best practices in the museum education field in the following ways.

Observe, plan, and facilitate K-12 programming, including gallery tours and hands-on artmaking experiences.
Complete research for and develop virtual learning materials.
Participate in monthly professional development workshops for the Museum's volunteer docents.
Evaluate education programs.
