Characters in Metal Educator Workshop

March 2, 2019

Led by UNT associate professor James Thurman, this free professional development took place at the Kimbell Art Museum in Forth Worth. Local art educators who attended were introduced to metal stamping techniques and ASCII art. ASCII, which stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is an encoding system for representing text in digital media. "ASCII art" is the use of those characters to create images rather than text written to communicate information. Drawing inspiration from digital media and the Kimbell's permanent collection, the participants explored essential questions about visual symbols, pattern, and identity through metal stamping. Participants went home with their own stamping kit and resources to help them implement a similar lesson in their classroom.
